Kevin Shanley Journalism Scholarship now available

Do you know a high school senior at a Carmelite parish or school who loves to write and could use some financial help for college attendance?

The Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (PCM) Order of Carmelites established the scholarship to promote careers in writing.

Fr. Kevin Shanley, O. Carm.

Fr. Kevin, 2007

Journalist, Director, Instructor and Celtophile, Carmelite Father Kevin Shanley was a pioneer in journalism for the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province. As editor of the Carmelite Review he published 406 issues from 1962 to 1998. He also began the “Carmelite News Service” as the press office for the Province. Concurrent with the Carmelite Review he was also editor of the Sword.  This award is to be given out in his memory as we invite students to contemplate a journalism career.

The Carmelite Review is committed to encouraging young people to consider being writers and reporters. Many opportunities in the field are available, including Catholic journalism. Writing about your faith through the eyes of Carmelite-developed roots can be very rewarding. The ability to express this cultivated and animate charism in words is the very reason for establishing this scholarship.

“Father Kevin left a legacy that should be embraced and acknowledged, “ says Sal Lema, Communication Director for the Province. “The world of journalism has seen a sharp drop since the evolution of the internet and social media networks. All the more reason to seek faith-based young adults as they begin to consider their future careers,” Lema said.
